Brownstown woman still recovering from 2019 wreck 12/30/20 9:43 AM When Kayia Davis was in the hospital after a serious wreck, a doctor told her husband, Brent Davis, that her first name in his native country means “Warrior.” Around that time, one of her friends gave her a bracelet that had that same word inscribed on it. Her friend, however, wasn’t aware her name had that meaning in another language. Warrior is used to describe a person who is very strong or brave and puts up a good fight in a battle. That’s a good description of the 42-year-old Brownstown woman, who overcame the odds and survived a wreck in which her truck was struck nearly head-on late Thanksgiving night, Nov. 28, 2019.

Data journalism project on missing women in Mexico wins Microsoft/Knight Center contest for training and funding

A data journalism project investigating thousands of cases of women missing in Mexico won $10,000 in financing and hands-on data visualization training, in a very competitive contest organized in a partnership between Microsoft and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin. Journalist Itxaro Arteta from news site Animal Político will spearhead the project in a country where official counts say 19,450 girls, adolescents and women are reported missing. Sheriff plans to purchase body cams

Sheriff plans to purchase body cams Sheriff Rick Meyer The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has secured funding from the Jackson County Council through the CARES Act to buy new body cameras and data storage. The sheriff’s department will be receiving 30 Pro-Vision body cameras for $549 each, totaling $16,470 overall. This cost includes docking stations used to charge the cameras and upload data from them. County police also are getting a new cloud-based storage system. The system is being purchased on a five-year plan to store 2 to 10 terabytes of data. It’s being purchased for a maximum cost of $89,540 for 10 terabytes, but the sheriff’s department agreed to work on keeping the costs of the plan down if able.
