CHUM honors 50 homeless community members who died in 2020
DULUTH, MN On Christmas Eve, Duluth s CHUM organization honored 50 of its community members who died in 2020.
Usually, CHUM holds the annual vigil outside Duluth s City Hall. This year, they held it virtually because of the pandemic.
Advocates for the homeless community say each and every person they honored Thursday was an important part of their community. They re all children of God, Rev Ben Margeson, CHUM s Congregational Outreach and Advocacy Corrdinator, said. If there s anything in preparing for this service that has dawned on me is that we can honor them in their death and also strive toward a better future.

This year s event took place not on the steps of the Duluth City Hall, as has been the tradition, but instead shifted to an online gathering so as to reduce the threat of COVID-19 transmission. Unable to gather in person this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, Duluth community members joined in an online version Thursday of CHUM S Christmas Eve Vigil, where they paid tribute to those who died.

One of the big things that CHUM does is help to support people who are homeless. They offer a food shelf, shelter, and supportive services for homeless individuals and families. Those services include helping to get people back on their feet, as navigating options available to many can be difficult. CHUM also works hard each year to make sure there is a warming shelter for the coldest nights in Duluth. They do that as a group effort with St. Louis County, the City of Duluth, Duluth HRA, and Loaves & Fishes.
