ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. As people spend the day honoring mothers, one New Mexico man is remembering the impact his wife and mother of his children left on the state.
Ben Trujillo is the head coach for the Hatch Valley High School girl’s basketball team. He’s also the husband of Karen Trujillo, former superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools.
Trujillo led his team to the state semi-finals this year, but they were one game short from the championship. You can make so many mistakes. Like even, oh that was a great game. That team played great. If you go look at it there s so many mistakes made,” he said.

The 2021 event will begin on a Monday afternoon and evening, with 24 games. On the third day of May. A third of those 24 quarterfinal games will be played at neutral sites, two of them featuring No. 1 seeds.

The Hatch Valley athletic director and girls basketball head coach usually has a lot on his plate when his work and coaching duties overlap, but he’s glad to have the distraction this time around.
Trujillo and his family suffered a tragic loss on Feb. 25 when Karen Trujillo, the Las Cruces Public Schools superintendent and wife of Ben Trujillo, was killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking her dogs at night.
