Machen mountain fire: Residents raise money for firefighters

Picture: Ben Cottam Picture: Ben Cottam One of the organisers of the fundraiser, Gill Howells, said: “Everybody was talking about the regeneration and thanking the firefighters and people were saying ‘what can we do as a thank you?’. “We created a Facebook page which allows people to donate to the firefighters charity directly if that s something they wish to do, or they can donate to the PayPal pool, which is a fundraiser to make up hampers and purchase items for the target individual stations involved.” The hampers will be full of treats, such as drinks, chocolate and crisps. There have been other attempts at fundraising for the fire crews, such as a car wash run by the local Co-op that raised £80 for SWFRS.

Machen mountain blaze burns for fourth day

The blaze on Machen mountain near Caerphilly was one of around 80 started deliberately across south Wales, with 100 breaking out in the last 24 hours. Crews in north Wales have also tackled a fire on the Great Orme in Llandudno. South Wales Fire Service said crews had had to retreat from one fire overnight as the terrain was too dangerous to work on in the dark.

Eileen Blane DETECTIVES remain committed to finding a thug who attacked an elderly woman and robbed her of her wedding ring before she died two months later. Eileen Blane, 87, died after being relentlessly beaten by a man who forced his way into her house on Castleton Avenue, Stretford, at around 2.30pm on Friday, February 3, 2017. The man struck Eileen on the head multiple times before throwing her to the floor and snatching the wedding ring from her finger. While he ransacked the upstairs of her property she bravely managed to escape and alert her neighbours. Her attacker inflicted countless injuries including broken ribs, a fractured vertebrae and further internal injuries and bruises.
