MISHAWAKA Penn-Harris-Madison educators will continue teaching social emotional learning lessons in the next school year, but administrators say they will review the lessons on diversity in response to objections from some parents.
The district also will allow parents to opt their students out of social emotional learning, or SEL, administrators said at a meeting Monday afternoon.
The lessons will be posted on the P-H-M website before students first day of classes, Aug. 18. Additional lessons will be posted in nine-week increments, aligning with the district s quarterly grading periods.
P-H-M leaders organized the meeting Monday for parents, the first of three such meetings, after a recent outcry over SEL and the lessons on diversity. The debate has been tied into the national controversy over critical race theory, a separate concept from SEL but with some similar traits.
