SR school board approves leasing land to farm | News, Sports, Jobs

khowell@salemnews.net CANFIELD – The South Range school board this week approved a lease agreement for the recently purchased property north of its sports complex. The board unanimously approved a tilling lease agreement with Less and Less Farm LLC on an annual basis for $80 per acre for the 13 acres north of the Rominger Sports Complex on Columbiana Canfield Road. The land will not be leased long-term and will remain available for school purposes at the board’s discretion. School counsel Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell LTD prepared the terms of the lease. In response to board member Taylor Christian’s question about the district’s liability under the lease, Treasurer Jim Phillips said Less and Less Farm LLC had to provide a certificate of insurance for $1 million and the district is held harmless.

The church organized drop boxes for underwear and sock donations at Nelson’s of Gloucester and the John Tarr Store, which is in Rockport, the organization said. The stores are offering a “buy-one, get half-off” pricing promotion on socks and underwear. “When money is tight in pandemic times, these essentials can sadly fall to the bottom of the list,” the church said in a flyer advertising the drive.

The board approved the contract with the South Range Classified Employees Association effective July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 at the same terms as the current one. Negotiations for a new three-year contract will begin in the fall. The board last month approved the same agreement with the teachers union. Schools Superintendent Bethany Carlson said at that time considering the pandemic and the uncertainty it brings, the best decision is to hold steady until the following year. In other business, the board approved three-year administrative contracts to Steve Matos, elementary principal and grants coordinator, and Shari Lewis, director of instruction and student services, effective Aug. 1, 2021 through July 32, 2014.

khowell@salemnews.net BEAVER TOWNSHIP The South Range school board has approved a continuation of its contract with the teachers union due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The board Monday night approved a “roll-over” contract with the South Range Education Association, an extension of current contract, through Aug. 31, 2022. Superintendent Bethany Carlson said considering the pandemic and the uncertainty it brings, the best decision is to hold steady until the following year. She said she will begin negotiations on a new three-year contract prior to the 2022-2023 school year. In other business, the board granted permission for the baseball and softball teams to travel to a tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in April pending state regulations regarding out-of-state travel.
