In his first media interview in the run up to the Assembly election, DMK president M.K. Stalin had told The Hindu that west Tamil Nadu will no longer be the fortress of the AIADMK. However, on Sunday as results of the Assembly elections trickled in, the voters proved him wrong. As per late-night trends, the AIADMK had won or established leads in 31 of the 57 seats across eight districts in its bastion. The DMK was ahead in more than 10 seats and had won Bargur and Coonoor.

Dharmapuri district handed out a resounding victory to the AIADMK alliance with the party winning all five seats. The constituencies also registered huge victory margin by the AIADMK victors adding a silver lining to the defeat faced by the party State-wide.
Palacode’s sitting MLA and the outgoing Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan secured a victory margin of 28,100 votes, defeating the DMK’s P.K.Murugan.
In Harur, the AIADMK’s sitting MLA V. Sampath Kumar registered a win against the CPI candidate A. Kumar by a margin of 30,362 votes.
Udhagamandalam: The rogue tusker, which was captured near Dharmapuri, was released deep inside Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiris in the early hours of Thursday.
Aged around 15 years, the tusker had created tension in Neruppur area near Pennagaram in Dharumapuri for the past 15 days by raiding crops and entering close to human habitats.
The forest department had initially attempted to chase the tusker away into forest area, but in vain. Subsequently, foresters tranquilized and captured the elephant on Wednesday. Later, it was taken to the MTR in a truck.
L C S Srikanth, deputy director, MTR-buffer zone, confirmed that the tusker was released in Asuvaramattam area on Thursday early morning. “The tusker seems to be docile. A special team has been formed to monitor the animal’s movement. Hopefully, the pachyderm would not have any problem in the new place. Coimbatore: The western region has recorded higher voter turnout than the state average in the assembly polls held on Tuesday. However, urbanised Coimbatore district had the lowest turnout of 68.7% in western Tamil Nadu, while rural Dharmapuri recorded a turnout of 82.35%.
While the backward Palacode constituency in Dharmapuri, from where education minister K P Anbalagan had won four times and contested this time too, registered the voter turnout of 87.3%, Edappadi constituency in Salem, which saw chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami crossing sword with DMK’s Sampath Kumar, came second with 85% polling.
Veerapandi in Salem and Pennagaram in Dharmapuri also saw more than 80% polling. “Dharmapuri historically records higher voter turnout than other districts in the region. This is primarily because the entire district comprises of rural areas, where people take voting seriously,” said an election officer, who didn’t want to be named.
