Chastened by the realities laid bare by the pandemic, a lot of companies are embracing fresh-start affirmations and promising newly enlightened, gentler, more equitable workplaces.
Let’s imagine we can take these pledges at face value. Perhaps leaders are finally tired of the dominant workplace model, what sociologists call “masculinity contest culture,” which rewards extreme confidence, the stamina to work long hours, dog-eat-dog competition, and the prioritization of work above all else, including family and friends. Or perhaps that they at least see that this type of culture is tiring other people out, even driving them to quit at record numbers.

âI was locked up for fifteen months,â the artist and illustrator Anita Kunz said, when reached in her native Toronto. âWhat else could I do but a painting a day?â When the coronavirus pandemic started, Kunz dug into a series of portraits of unsung women. âIt was easy to research. There are so many in every field,â she joked. She presented some of the finished drawings to the graphic designer Chip Kidd, who responded enthusiastically, helping her secure a book contract. By September of 2020, she had reached the number of drawings that the publisher, Pantheon, had set as the upper limit: a hundred and fifty. Since then, Kunz has painted âat least another hundred.â âTheyâre small, sixteen inches high at the most, and all the same size. Theyâre easy to pack in a box. I now have boxes of them,â she said. An Oxfam staff training document says “privileged white women” are supporting the root causes of sexual violence by wanting bad men imprisoned.
In the wake of sex scandals that have rocked the charity, Oxfam has produced guidance which states that: “Mainstream feminism centres on privileged white women and demands that ‘bad men’ be fired or imprisoned”.
Accompanied by a cartoon of a crying white woman, it adds that this “legitimises criminal punishment, harming black and other marginalised people”.
