Penda China creates trio of sculptural entrances in Haikou City

Penda China has built three glazed aluminium-clad entrance canopies to the Haikou Wenming East Road Tunnel in Haikou City, China. Built as the entrances to a 2,700-metre-long tunnel under the Nandu River on Hainan Island in China, the bright white canopies are informed by the shape of seashells. Penda China designed the entrance canopies for the Haikou Wenming East Road Tunnel Seashells were the main source of inspiration for us, said Penda China co-founder Sun Dayong. The canopy is not a mere replica of shellfish, we distilled the general shape out of a bivalve shellfish and instilled our creativity into beautification and detailings, he told Dezeen. The entrance bears the hallmark of a sculptural art form.

Haikou Wenming East Road Tunnel / Penda China

© Zhi Xia Penda China was commissioned to design three entrances to the tunnel, one of which is much larger in scale and located on the east side, by the shoreline; the other two are on the west side and much smaller. Generally, vehicular tunnel entrances must provide a transition zone in order to allow the human eye time to acclimate to the considerable change in brightness when going into the tunnel. To dispel any danger to potential drivers, Penda China’s design does away with LED light grilles, and instead incorporates a curved madeleine-shaped canopy. This open clamshell shape ushers in natural light, while maintaining a uniformity of luminance at the entrance.
