A notice posted in March to the Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder Restoration website announced the cancelation of this year’s alewife festival, with the possibility of a make-up event in the fall: “BUT, the fish do not care about Covid and you can make plans to see them return!”
Body recovered at Benton Falls Dam; foul play not cited
BENTON A body was recovered Monday night from the Benton Falls Dam on the Sebasticook River.
On Tuesday, state police said there was nothing to indicate foul play was involved in the death.
Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, wrote in an email Monday that state police had been notified earlier in the day of a body in the water near the dam.
The Fairfield Fire Department helped retrieve the body, according to Moss, and the state Office of Chief Medical Examiner had been brought into the investigation.

A body was retrieved from the Sebasticook River at the Benton Falls Dam on Monday night, but the circumstances do not appear to be suspicious, according to Maine State Police.
Contacted late Monday for comment, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in an email that state police were called about a possible body in the water at the Benton dam.
“With the help of Fairfield Fire Dept the body was retrieved,” her email says.
The state Medical Examiner’s Office is assisting in the investigation, according to Moss.
Body Retrieved From Water in Benton Monday Night
According to the Kennebec Journal, crews pulled a body from the water of Sebasticook River Monday night in Benton.
Authorities, as well as the Fairfield Fire Department, responded Monday evening to the Benton Falls Dam. Reports indicate that the death is not being deemed suspicious and remains were apparently removed without issue.
