Jacksonville Wastewater Treatment Plant Rehab To Begin Phase I

This past October, the U.S. EPA began placing new limits on municipalities wastewater to limit the amount of phosphorus going into the Mississippi River from the Midwest. The element has primarily created a hypoxia zone at the mouth of the river where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Jamie Hedden, engineer for Benton & Associates, says the city kickstarted the major project with approval of the redesign and construction of a new head works at the wastewater treatment plant. He says the head works is the first stop in the city’s sewer treatment process: “It’s the first stop of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. All of the wastewater comes to the head works, and it’s the first screening that takes the large solids out, and really it’s the first chance to get some of those solids out o

Council Works to Keep Good Water Coming in, Dangerous Water Going Out of the City

A waver of bids and acceptance of a proposal for continuing repair work on the city’s collector well pump station. The pumps in the Ranney Pump House near Naples supply fresh water from the Illinois river up 23 miles of underground pipe to the Jacksonville Water Treatment Plant. Jamie Headed with Benton & Associates says there are two main pumps that feed water to the city. He says the pumps push approximately 2700 gallons of water per minute to feed the treatment plant and they currently are in need of both general maintenance and repair.

New Jacksonville Council Hears Resolutions on Public Protection, Utilities

Public protection and utilities were the largest items requiring action last night for the new Jacksonville City Council. Prior to the workshop session, Ward 1 Alderwoman Darcella Speed was officially sworn in. During the workshop session, Jamie Hedden of Benton & Associates gave a second presentation concerning Town Brook Rehabilitation. Hedden said that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources had completed a study on the best solution to eliminating flooding along the Town Brook. He said that IDNR had selected a plan of replacing two culverts at the railroad spur just north of Routt Street to allow for better flow of water. The plan says that 73 structures will be removed from the 100 year flood plain and present capitalized benefits of $5.7 million dollars. The project is estimated to cost a littl
