Women s football Hege Riise able to take positives from Friday s defeat against France

ENGLAND interim boss Hege Riise says Friday’s loss to France provided some “great answers” in terms of where the team is at. The Lionesses were beaten 3-1 by Les Bleues in the friendly in Caen, where the hosts went two goals up via Sandy Baltimore’s first-half strike and a Viviane Asseyi penalty just after the hour mark. England reduced the deficit through Fran Kirby’s 79th-minute spot-kick and Keira Walsh then hit the post before Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored France’s third. It was England’s second match under Riise, following the 6-0 win over Northern Ireland in February.

Irish Fall 2-1 in Overtime to No 18 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team (6-6-0) gave No. 18 Oklahoma State (12-3-1) all it had and then some on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 in overtime. The Fighting Irish outshot the Cowgirls 10-9 and had several near chances to pull ahead in the second half.  Sophomore midfielder Maddie Mercado secured Notre Dame’s lone goal of the game via a free kick during the 27th minute. It marked her second goal of the season, for she has now scored in two straight games.  HOW IT HAPPENED Notre Dame nearly got on the board first in the 11th minute when Kiki Van Zanten fired a shot off her left foot from about 25 yards. The ball soared to the left-side upper-90, missing the mark by inches as it hit the crossbar and ricocheted out.
