Issues Of The Environment: Women s History Month-The Life And Legacy Of Mary Beth Doyle

Overview In 2008, an underutilized park and natural area was renamed to commemorate and celebrate the life of Mary Beth Doyle, widely recognized as one of Michigan’s most prominent environmental advocates, who tragically passed away in 2004. Her professional career included positions with the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor, where she worked for 12 years. Mary Beth’s efforts spanned the local, state, and national environmental movements. She worked with professionals, policymakers, health-impacted groups, and others to increase awareness of endocrine disrupting chemicals, and the links between public and environmental health. She persuaded the first major retailer in the country to agree to stop selling children’s chew toys made from toxic poly vinyl chloride. Malcolm X in 1992. Born in Springfield, Mass., Carter graduated from Hampton University, where she was initially a special education major before switching to the theater. Around campus, she was known as the costume designer. Following her Black Panther success, Carter made history a second time by becoming the first Black costume designer to get a star on Hollywood s Walk of Fame. Most recently, she outfitted Eddie Murphy and the rest of the cast of the much anticipated Coming 2 America. A project that she was chosen for shortly after her Oscar win.
