Wildcats fall to Mt. Vernon The Cassville baseball team (8-17) fell to Mt. Vernon on Friday, 3-1. The Wildcats managed 5 hits, but struggled to find home plate. Logan White led with 2 hits, and Corey Thomas went five innings on the mound, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits, striking out 3. The Wildcats also fell to Nevada on Friday, 16-3. Cassville returns to action today (Wednesday) at Spokane at 4:30 p.m., the last regular-season contest of the year. On Monday, the Wildcats face Reeds Spring in the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at 4:30 p.m. in Aurora. Tigers 2-1 in close games last week The Exeter baseball team (11-9) went 2-1 last week, with all games decided by a single run. On Wednesday, the Tigers topped Miller, 6-5, allowing a run in the bottom of the seventh but holding on for the win. Zach Lee led with 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Aaron Beck added 2 RBI. Carver-Montgomery Drops 6A Girls State Championship Game 49-41 to Hazel Green The Trojans (36-1) of Coach Tim Miller  became the first school in the AHSAAs highest classes (6A or 7A) to win four state titles in a row. The state championship was first in the AHSAA’s 99-year history of the state basketball championships to be crowned at UAB’s legendary Bartow Arena. Class 6A state tournament MVP Samiya Steele scored 18 points to led Hazel Green. The junior was 5-of-9 from the field with three 3-pointers and was 5-of-5 at the foul line to help the Trojans hold off a strong Wolverines comeback down the stretch.

By AccessWDUN Staff North Hall s Rylee McCall hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime to help the Lady Trojans past Dawson County in the first round of the Region 7-3A tournament. GAINESVILLE  Rylee McCall s go-ahead 3-pointer with seconds left in overtime helped lift North Hall past Dawson County, 55-51, in the first round of the Region 7-3A tournament at home on Thursday.  McCall (11 points) hit from beyond the arc with less than eight seconds to go, sending the Lady Trojans to the Class 3A state tournament for the eighth straight season. They ll play No. 1 seed Lumpkin County on Saturday in Dahlonega. 

Softball still Wilks primary focus, but Sparta center showing she can shoot hoops, too

Natalie Wilks has made quite a name for herself in the southwest Missouri softball world while playing travel ball for the Kickapoo Lady Chiefs and being a ferocious figure in the center circle. Admittedly, she’s been a contrast of extreme proportions by being timid as a passive center on the hardwood. Midway through her sophomore season at Sparta, Wilks is finally starting to look for her own shot and showing why she’s been told to shoot more. She turned in a career-high 23-point performance in the Lady Trojans’ 79-50 victory versus Clever on Thursday. “Our assistant coach is always telling me to shoot when I’m open — I get that a lot,” Wilks said. “Normally, I’m used to passing it to (teammate Laney Humble) because she’s kind of all-it for us and we have other girls who score, too. But they’re telling me to shoot it more this year, so I’m trying.
