BENGALURU: Union railways minister Piyush Goyal has written a letter to Karnataka CM B S Yediyurappa to deposit an outstanding share of Rs 847 crore for various railway projects in the state.
However, timing of the letter to the cash-strapped state government amid the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a public outcry on social media.
In a letter to CM dated May 3, Goyal said: Railways have taken up 16 projects on cost sharing basis in Karnataka, an amount of Rs 847 crore is outstanding towards share of Karnataka government in these cost share projects”. Further, he stated that: “Non deposition of cost share by Karnataka government is affecting execution of cost sharing projects in the state”.

BENGALURU: The state unit of Congress on Friday announced that MPs, MLAs and MLCs will use their Local Area Development fund to the tune of Rs 100 crore for procuring vaccines. The fund can be used to buy 30 lakh doses of vaccine at the current rate.
KPCC president DK Shivakumar and opposition leader Siddaramaiah announced that the party will provide Rs 10 crore from internal funds and raise the remaining Rs 90 crore from the development fund of every MLA and MLC. “This is an unprecedented decision in Karnataka. Our 95 MPs, MLAs and MLCs will donate at least Rs 1 crore each,” Siddaramaiah said.
Police patrol an area in the city on Thursday.
BENGALURU: The Karnataka government is reportedly considering extending the lockdown beyond May 24 as the Covid-19 positivity rate and deaths are still high in many districts. There are some signs that the second wave may ease by the first week of June, but experts have recommended a cautious approach to the government.
Recently, Dr Balram Bhargava, the director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said in an interview that restrictions should continue in places with a positivity rate of more than 10 per cent. Most Karnataka districts, except Chitradurga and Haveri, have a rate of over 10 per cent. Government officials said it was likely that the lockdown would be extended if the situation didn’t improve by May 20.
