Retired civil engineer Jon Smith is one of several NCE readers who believes its time to “knock down” Hammersmith Bridge and start again. Smith – who spent his career working across a number of sectors and major projects, including a rail viaduct on the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop – asked if we are “putting too much value on the historical value of the preservation of Hammersmith Bridge?” Smith – who worked predominantly within the offshore oil and gas sector – pointed out that if we disposed of the old London Bridge by “flogging it to the Americans” why are we so determined to restore Hammersmith Bridge to its former glory?

Shaun Bailey today began a 32-hour bus tour that will see him visit all 32 London boroughs. Credit: Parsons Media Shaun Bailey this morning began a 32-hour bus tour of London as part of a final campaign push ahead of next week’s election. Starting in west London, where he grew up, the Conservative candidate will make his way to every London borough to “bring the politics to the street” and “address the issues that local people have”. The first stop this morning was Hammersmith Bridge, which has been closed since April 2019 due to safety concerns. Mr Bailey told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he had a “three-step plan” for resolving the situation.
