Crawford County sticks out like a sore, red thumb on the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention s COVID Data Tracker map of the United States.
It s one of only two counties in the entire northeastern United States to currently have a high level of COVID-19 community transmission. Those counties are identified in red on the map.
As a result, people in Crawford County could soon be required to wear face masks indoors, even if they are fully vaccinated against the virus. If that happens, there will be a lot of frustration and a lot of conversation in Crawford County, said Becky Dawson, an epidemiologist with Allegheny College in Meadville. We have an anti-masking community. Some people have been very dedicated about wearing a mask, but they are in the minority.

The Warner Prize is awarded annually for a significant contribution to observational or theoretical astronomy during the five years preceding the award. It is given to an astronomer resident in North America who has not attained 36 years of age in the year designated for the award or must be within eight years of receipt of their doctorate. This is Dawson’s second AAS prize; she also received the Annie Jump Cannon Award in 2017 for her earlier work modeling the dynamical interactions of exoplanets in multiplanet systems.
“I’m not surprised to see Bekki Dawson honored with another Society prize,” said AAS President Paula Szkody from the University of Washington. “She’s been a rising star in our field since her graduate student days.”

Meadville Tribune Dec 31, 2020
Editorâs note:
During the final days of 2020, The Meadville Tribune will feature people who made a difference in the lives of their Crawford County neighbors. People were nominated by Tribune readers.
Three days after Christmas, Becky Dawson was busy with the same mission she has pursued nearly every Monday evening at 7 since early April: providing reliable information about COVID-19 and responding to every conceivable question regarding the pandemic from residents of Crawford County and beyond.
Dawson, an epidemiologist and professor of global health studies at Allegheny College, has hosted weekly question-and-answer sessions as part of the Crawford County PA COVID-19 Information group formed on Facebook by Crawford County Commissioner Eric Henry.
