It may well be the marquee event of awards season at Aspen High School: Monday night’s senior awards and local scholarship ceremony recognized the accomplishments of the class of 2021 with dozens of honors and funds for college.
All told, 81 seniors walked away with more than $350,000 in college scholarships from nearly 40 local donor groups, according to Susanne Morrison, the administrative coordinator at Aspen High School’s post-secondary counseling department. Students also scored hundreds of thousands of dollars from regional and national awards, some of which include full ride scholarships for all four years of college (see sidebar).
UPDATED at 10:20 a.m. May 6 with a statement from an online rental platform.
Supporters and opponents of short-term rentals said Wednesday that they favor increased oversight in Dallas but were split on whether the city should allow them to continue operating or impose a ban.
Nearly 100 people spoke during a Dallas City Council public hearing on regulating rooms and homes advertised on Airbnb, VRBO and other platforms.
Dallas currently doesn’t have rules for short-term rentals. Owners should register with the city and pay hotel occupancy taxes, but most of them don’t do either. The city also doesn’t have an effective way to enforce fines or punish property owners with the most complaints.

Since the pandemic broke in March, Kim Zimmer’s job has been getting hundreds of Aspen High School teachers and students on the same screen.
“High school is high-stakes time for students,” said Zimmer, Aspen High’s technology integration specialist. She also teaches broadcast journalism. “We have kids that really want to achieve and kids that are in the IB program and students that really have been dedicated to being successful, so I didn’t want us to lapse in the quality of instruction.”
Before the virus jolted the spring semester at schools across the country, remote learning had not been put into practice at the Aspen School District. New to teachers’ professional development was their having to learn fast about online instruction. Students also felt the pressure.
