OKALOOSA ISLAND An abundance of fresh air, plenty of room for social distancing and the chance to at least briefly escape the confines of indoor spaces have led to many more people enjoying the great outdoors since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic about a year ago.
For example, while this early, still-cold part of the year isn’t ideal for fishing, the number of fishermen who cast their lines from the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier from August 2020 through January 2021 was 12.5% higher than the turnout during that same stretch in late 2019 and early 2020.
“We also saw a 17% increase in walkers,” or folks who visited the pier just to stroll on it and enjoy the view, Eric Brown, the pier’s general manager, said Thursday. “And we’ve been seeing a lot more surfers. Since the pandemic started, more people have been trickling into the outdoors, which I think is a good thing.”
