Adopt an entrepreneurial mindset to succeed

Joanna Oakey considers herself an entrepreneur first and a lawyer second. Such thinking is critical, she says, for boutique firm leaders to succeed post-pandemic.
Speaking recently on The Boutique Lawyer Show, managing director of Aspect Legal Ms Oakey said that innovation is “born not of coming up with the perfect idea the first-time round, but being able to try things again and again and again, until you hit on the thing that really works”.
“That’s where boutique practice suits entrepreneurial people. The entrepreneurial spirit has room to move in the boutique space, as we’re able to do innovative things,” she said.

‘It’s nice to give back to the legal community’

Maria Savvas has just completed a three-year tenure as president of the Law Society of the Northern Territory – a role she says not only made her a better lawyer, but also a better person.
By her own admission, Ms Savvas was originally motivated to get involved with the Law Society of the NT because of rising costs for insurance and practising certificates.
“I’d run around the office and whinge about it, and everyone would tell me, ‘Look, just stop whinging about it, just get on the council and do something about it’. And that’s exactly what I did,” she recalled.
Legal business owners have to rethink their business models so that value propositions are not only more compatible with client needs, but also with the lifestyles of said business owners.
