Last Saturday night, the NYPD sent scores of police officers with helmets and batons to clear Washington Square Park at 10:00 p.m. to enforce a curfew two hours before the park’s normal closing time. They were met by hundreds of people who had been using the park with few or no rules for weeks. The police were quick to resort to force and arrests, using fists, batons and pepper spray. They closed the park, but with an effort that would have worked to quell a small riot. My reaction as the former NYPD commander of the 6th Precinct, which covers the park, was to wonder how things had gotten to that point.

City of Chico cleans The Wedge with compliance from individuals
Over 17 tons of trash and debris were removed from The Wedge with the compliance of individuals on Thursday.

CHICO, Calif. - Chico Police Department continued their effort to enforce the City’s Park Rules and Regulations at “The Wedge” on Thursday, according to the City of Chico.
Staff from the Public Works Department removed over 17 tons of trash and debris from “The Wedge” at Pine and Cypress streets.
City staff worked with people in the area to determine what items could be thrown away and what items were personal belongings. Any items identified as personal belongings that were too large for individuals to carry out will be held at the Chico Police Department for up to 90 days.
