No one injured in small aircraft crash near Terre View Drive, Marshland Street

No one was injured after a small one-person aircraft crashed around 6:35 p.m. today in a farmer’s field near NW Terre View Drive and NW Marshland Street.   A middle-aged man was piloting the aircraft, said Ryan Scharnhorst, assistant fire chief and operation officer for the Pullman Fire Department. The man was evaluated on the scene by first responders, which included one fire engine, an ambulance and two law enforcement officers.  The aircraft was upside down when first responders arrived, he said. The aircraft received minimal damage that is easily repairable.  The man was doing touch-and-go landings, which involves repeatedly taking off from the ground and touching down again without stopping, said Pullman Police Sgt. Todd Dow. The aircraft was moving at low speeds.

Discussion about community survey on Pullman policing begins

The Pullman Police Advisory Committee brainstormed ideas for a community survey to collect input about known areas of success and improvement for the Pullman Police Department. David Makin, committee member and WSU associate professor of criminal justice and criminology, said the survey could focus on the public’s view of policing or it could take a narrower approach on specific police interactions. The committee agreed the survey should collect data from Pullman residents who have had direct contact with police officers. Direct contact could include being pulled over, being a victim of a crime or dialing 911, Makin said. The survey would have a section to submit the badge number of the officer.

Pullman PD launches officer wellness app

The Pullman Police Department partnered with the company Cordico to develop a new officer wellness app, which launched at the end of last month. Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins said the department’s Wellness Committee helped develop the new app, aiming to provide mental and emotional support to officers in need. Officers can access therapists, peer support and wellness modules through the app. The wellness modules cover topics like depression, support systems, stress management, emotional first aid and more, he said. The app is also available to the public under a “public access” feature. Jenkins said community members can access Pullman PD social media accounts, contacts, alerts, media galleries and crime prevention tips through the app.

Community members rally against anti-Asian hate

Around 300 people gathered Saturday afternoon at Reaney Park to support Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and to protest racism against the AAPI community. Participants held signs with phrases such as “Stop Asian Hate” and “Hate is a Virus” during the program and while marching through downtown Pullman. Organizers planned the rally in response to the over 3,800 hate crimes against AAPI people in the last year, which include the Atlanta spa shootings on March 16, where six of eight people killed were AAPI women.  Jiemei Lin, event organizer and senior graphic designer for WSU’s College of Education, led a moment of silence for the eight victims.
