Far from reducing its usefulness, downsizing the kitchen of this two-bedder condo created greater overall functionality.
Itâs no big secret: proper space planning is one of the most important steps in the renovation process. So, working out a suitable layout was naturally the first order of business when interior designer Lucas Ngan started conceptualising the new look of this 86 sqm Balestier condominium with its two owners.
âBoth the husband and wife are very close friends of mine and theyâre incredibly adventurous people, especially when it comes to new experiences,â says Lucas. âIn fact, my friend was very hands-on during the renovation. He even changed the bedroom door handles personally because he wanted to learn how to do it!â

Having the right storage solutions in a small home can make a big difference.
Shrinking condominium sizes as well as shoebox units arenât new in land-scarce Singapore. So when interior designers Jax and Cecil were roped in to renovate this compact one-bedder condo unit last year, their goal was to provide its owners â a young couple in their late 20s â with a home that would be big on functionality despite its innately small size.
âThe main challenge was definitely the size (of the unit),â says Jax. âBut it wasnât that big of a constraint because we work on plenty of two-room HDB flats, and we were able to apply most of the lessons that weâve learnt to this project. Theyâre essentially the same type of home, just with different layouts.â
