NEGOMBO, Sri Lanka, May 29 Sri Lanka is facing its worst beach pollution crisis as tonnes of plastic waste from a burning container ship wash ashore, a senior environment official said today. Fishermen have been banned from an 80-kilometre stretch of coast near the Singapore-registered MV.
Millions of plastic pellets from a container ship ablaze off Colombo have already washed up on beaches, along with other hazardous waste. The disaster threatens the lucrative fishing and tourism sectors.
