In 1973, Buchli was assigned to a marine fighter attack squadron and sent to Thailand and, after completing that assignment, participated in the Marine Advanced Degree Program at the University of West Florida, in Pensacola, receiving his master s of science degree in aeronautical engineering systems in 1975. Buchli was then assigned to a fighter attack squadron in Beaufort, S.C., before attending the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Md., in 1977. While serving as a naval test pilot, Buchli submitted his application to become a NASA astronaut, having met all the basic requirements. He was a U.S. citizen, held a master’s degree in an engineering-related field, had flown over 1,000 hours in a jet aircraft and was in excellent physical condition. However, becoming an astronaut was still a long shot because for the 35 slots that were open, there were 8,000 applicants.

The driver of a fatal single vehicle crash from Tuesday, Jan. 19 has been identified by the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) Daniel Steidl, a 48-year-old from Bismarck was traveling northbound around 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, on County Road 14 south of New Rockford, N.D., when the vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee went in both the east and west ditch. According to NDHP, the vehicle vaulted over an approach near 17th Street NE, landed and began to roll. During the rollover, the vehicle caught fire, coming to a rest facing to the south, southeast direction, according to the news release from NDHP.

Richter inducted into ND Water Users Hall of Fame

New Rockford man honored on Dec. 10 in virtual ceremony. 4:42 pm, Dec. 16, 2020 × Charlie Richter Charlie Richter of New Rockford represented Eddy County on the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District for 43 years. For his tireless efforts, Richter has been inducted into the North Dakota Water Users Hall of Fame. Richter, who served from 1969 to 2012, was honored during the 57th annual Joint North Dakota Water Convention and Irrigation Expo. The ceremony was held virtually Dec. 10 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Induction into the Hall of Fame is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated an extended commitment to develop, manage and protect North Dakota’s water resources.
