A primary care doctor in New York has been indicted on charges of manslaughter in the second degree after one of his patients died of an opioid overdose, according to the state attorney general s office.
Sudipt Deshmukh, MD, allegedly prescribed a toxic mix of opioids and other controlled substances to a patient he knew was suffering from addiction for a decade, prosecutors said.
The Pittsford, New York-based doctor was also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, and six counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance prescription for overprescribing high doses of opioids.
He was also charged with healthcare fraud for inducing Medicare to pay for the medically unnecessary prescriptions that ultimately contributed to his patient s overdose death.

Around 2009, a 16-year-old girl went to a clinic in New York City for her first gynecology exam. The doctor, a middle-aged man, disarmed her with awkward, self-deprecating jokes. Dr. Robert Hadden had delivered the girl years earlier. He allegedly instructed her to undress, climb onto the table and “get on all fours,” according to court documents related to a lawsuit that was filed in April 2019. After a prolonged exam, Hadden “proceeded to rub both of his ungloved hands up and down her body,” according to the suit, which claims that Hadden penetrated the girl with his hands during two appointments. Neither Hadden nor his lawyer responded to questions for this story.
