Gariepy guest column: Loss of his hand has never held back Tim Pollard

Carole Gariepy Special for The Gardner News We all feel sorry for ourselves sometimes, and especially this past year with all the restrictions, limitations, uncertainties and changes that have occurred. COVID has affected all of us. We don’t just need shots of the vaccine, we need shots of inspiration, and I would like to share the one I recently got when visiting in New Braintree with my friend’s grandson, Tim Pollard. The sparkle in Tim’s eyes and the friendly spontaneous outreach of his left hand to greet me drew me to him immediately. He has no right hand to shake with, and the quick extension of his left somehow prompted an automatic response for me to extend my left also. His self-confidence and obvious lack of embarrassment touched me. I was emotionally moved and impressed and wanted to hear his story, a story of strength and courage he willingly shared.

Baystate Health plan to close Mary Lane Outpatient Center in Ware criticized at hearing Updated Apr 01, 2021; WARE Legislators urged state regulators during a hearing on Thursday to closely scrutinize data submitted by Baystate Health to justify closing its Mary Lane Outpatient Center. The state Department of Public Health, which convened the “essential services” hearing, said it would render a decision on the proposed closing in 15 days. The agency says on its website, however, that it cannot legally require a hospital to remain open, though it does work to ensure community impacts from the closing are minimized. A New Braintree man in his 30s would have bled to death had he not been rushed to the Mary Lane emergency department, his mother said during the hearing while choking back tears.
