New Iberia creates Safe Exchange Zone outside police department

A new Safe Exchange Zone has been created outside of the New Iberia Police Department.
The Exchange Zone is a specific space in the NIPD parking lot where community members can conduct private party transactions and safe custody exchanges.
Police say the zone is located in well-lit parking spaces in front of the New Iberia Police Department on Main Street. The area will be recorded by video 24-hours a day.
The Department recommends that community members utilizing the zone complete transactions on Monday - Friday, between 6:00 a.m. â 6:00 p.m. during department business hours.

New Iberia – The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested by the New Iberia Police Department (NIPD) to investigate a shooting incident involving their officers on May 18, 2021.
The preliminary investigation revealed that shortly after 1:15 p.m., NIPD was contacted about a vehicle stopped in the roadway near the intersection of Center Street (LA Hwy 14) and Dale Street with the driver sleeping in the driver’s seat. New Iberia officers responded to the area. Upon arrival, officers encountered a subject sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. An officer on scene began knocking on the driver’s side window in an attempt to awaken the driver. The subject woke up as another officer was positioning their marked patrol unit in front of the vehicle.

Louisiana State Police are currently on scene of a shooting involving a New Iberia Police Officer.
Troopers confirmed that the incident happened Tuesday afternoon in the city. Witnesses tell KATC that the shooting happened at Center Street and Dale Street.
According to LSP, one suspect was involved in the shooting refused medical attention. That suspect is now in custody.
Details are limited. KATC has a crew en route to the scene.
Following the shooting, New Iberia Police Department says they contact State Police to handle the investigation.

Gas station clerk accused of hitting person in head with bottle during disturbance

A New Iberia gas station clerk was arrested Thursday after police say he struck a person in the head with a bottle during a disturbance.
Police say they responded to a business on Wednesday, May 5, in the 600 block of Hopkins Street in reference to the incident.
During their investigation, police learned from both parties involved that the victim was asked to count money being handed over to the cashier. The victim allegedly became angry and punched the Plexiglas shield at the counter.
