cschuldt@nujournal.com An 11-year-old Welsch pony named Flash was extremely popular with the kindergarten students during the Ag Day event. Spring Ag Day returned to New Ulm Middle School Thursday. Students from Jefferson Elementary and the New Ulm Middle School were able to learn about livestock and farming implements from FFA students. Kindergarten students were able to get up close with a two-month-old cow during Ag Day. NEW ULM The Spring Ag Day returned to New Ulm Middle School Thursday with several animal exhibits and farm implements. New Ulm Future Farmers of America (FFA) advisor Kelsey Brandt said the FFA students were excited to host the Ag Day this year. Last year the event had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Some additional precautions were taken this year. Students toured the show in class groups to prevent large gatherings but Ag Day was able to continue similarly to past events. New Ulm Police • Responded to a three-vehicle crash with minor injuries on Highland Avenue and Oak Street at 3:03 p.m. May 5. Road conditions were wet. Sydney Owens, 16, New Ulm, was driving a 2017 Ford northbound when she said she sneezed, causing her to strike the rear end of a 2003 Toyota driven by Carter Lang, 17, New Ulm, who was also northbound. The impact caused the Toyota to strike the rear of a 2008 Dodge driven by Kaylee Hutchinson, 18, New Ulm. Owens and Hutchinson reported minor injuries. Damage was minor to all three vehicles. All three drivers wore seat belts. • Received information about an argument over a water leak at Traulich Estates, 2201 N. Broadway, at 10:15 a.m. May 5. A report was sent to police investigators.

School board approves summer projects | News, Sports, Jobs

cschuldt@nujournal.com NEW ULM The New Ulm Public Schools’ Board of Education approved $281,626 in summer contracts at Thursday’s school board. The list of contracts includes 12 different projects. The first contract was for playground maintenance awarded to Safety First Playground for $12,400. A $9,940 boiler inspection and repair was awarded to Paape’s. Paape’s was also awarded a contract to install heating and cooling loop filtration systems to monitor Glycol systems. Blackout shades installation for pre-k rooms was awarded to Design Home Center for $5,020. Paape’s will provide and install digital cameras for $9,730. Minneco will paint 12 classrooms at Jefferson and New Ulm Middle School for $2,150. Turf maintenance at the New Ulm High School athletic field will be done by Turfix for $3,950. Kendall Door and Hardware will replace New Ulm Middle School classroom doors for $50,915. Ground Zero will replace and update the New Ulm Middle School parking lot for $65,54

New Ulm Middle School student wins Minnesota VFW 2nd District essay contest | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM Cullen Slette, son of Katie and Trevor Slette, won both the local and the district 2020/2021 Patriot’s Pen essay contest. An eighth-grader at New Ulm Middle School, Cullen received $100 as the local winner and $200 for his performance at the district level, which includes 35 VFW posts, ranging from the suburbs of the Twin Cities to as far south and west as Jackson and Lakefield. Patriot’s Pen is an annual youth essay program open to students in grades 6 through 8, and the topic of the essay varies from year to year. This past year, more than $1.4 million was awarded to winning essays. New Ulm/Sleepy Eye VFW Post 1648 will contact local school districts this fall looking for interested students.
