Terrell Lee Smith (Terry)
Terrell Lee Smith (Terry) passed away at his home in Pagosa Springs, Colo., on Saturday, Dec. 19, with his wife, Charlene, at his side. Terry had been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in September 2020. He was 69.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Anna May (Taylor) Smith, of Kramer, Ind., and sister, Marlena (Smith) Thomas, of Oxford, Ind.
Terry earned his associate degree from Sams Technical Institute (ITT) in 1971. He began an illustrious career in telecommunications working for Western Electric (which became Lucent and later Alcatel-Lucent). His work spanned the areas of quality control, system testing, customer field support and network testing. Terry won multiple awards and honors with the pinnacle being his appointment to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, the highest attainable rank for a technical employee. He was an acknowledged expert in the telecommunications field and a beloved colleague to many.
As we noted earlier today, legendary wrestler Danny Hodge passed away at the age of 88, with various names in the wrestling industry all paying tribute. The latest is the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, where Hodge was inducted in 1976, releasing a statement on his passing.

Amit Deokar, an associate professor of Operations and Information Systems in the Manning School of Business, has been recognized as a Distinguished Member (Cum Laude) by the Association for Information Systems (AIS).
With 4,400 members representing 1,951 higher education institutions in 98 countries, AIS is the largest and most prestigious international professional association for academics involved in research and teaching of information systems.
Deokar is just the second faculty member from the UMass system, and third from the commonwealth, to be recognized as a distinguished member.

The William Dawson Professor at the School of Computer Science received the recognition from the world s largest and most prestigious society of computing professionals.

Prof. Xue (Steve) Liu of McGill’s School of Computer Science has been recognized as a 2020 Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery, which describes itself as “the world’s largest computing society” with a mandate to “raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues.” The ACM has 100,000 members around the world, representing universities, research institutions and the private sector.
In 2017, Prof. Liu was awarded the Mitacs Professor Award for Outstanding Leadership.
