After a hard year for restaurants due to COVID-19, some are taking advantages of a biannual event to help bring customers back. COLUMBIA -  After a hard year for restaurants due to COVID-19, some are taking advantages of a biannual event to help bring customers back. Some downtown Columbia’s restaurants and bars will participate Restaurant Week from July 12 through July 18. Participating businesses will create special menus, drinks and deals all week long. This year s event also includes Drinks in the District. Restaurants like Shakespeare’s and Pizza Tree are not participating in the event this year, even though they were some of the most popular spots during past Restaurant Weeks.

Businesses Decide On Mask Requirements As Boone County Health Order Lifts

Columbia and Boone County’s health order that has required masks in public places for most of the past year expired at 11:59 a.m. Wednesday. Masks are still required in city and county buildings, at MU and in Columbia Public Schools buildings. Businesses, however, can make their own decisions about requirements. As COVID-19 case numbers have decreased and vaccination numbers have increased, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services decided to move away from the ordinance, instead favoring recommendations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends people continue to wear masks while inside public spaces. Many businesses took to social media leading up to the order’s expiration to lay out their plans. Some will continue requiring masks to enter, while others are leaving it up to the customers.

Columbia businesses prepare differently for expiring health order

COLUMBIA - Starting Wednesday, businesses in Columbia will be able to set their own restrictions regarding masks and social distancing.  Health orders will expire May 12 at 11:59 a.m. KOMU 8 talked to nine businesses on what their next steps are. Boone County Health Director Stephanie Browning and Columbia Mayor Brian Treece announced last week that the city would not extend the current health order after it expires at 11:59 a.m. on May 12. This is due to declining COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.  The Columbia/Boone County Health Department said it will give recommendations rather than orders.  “Wearing masks, social distancing, and avoiding mass gatherings are still the best ways to keep our loved ones safe, Browning said at the briefing last week. We ll keep working on education and vaccination.

New York-style boiled bagels are (finally!) making their way to the Midwest

Bagels. You know them – or at least you think you do. But until you’ve had a fresh New York-style bagel – a circular bread with a hole in the center that’s been briefly boiled and then baked – you haven’t experienced them at their best. Boiling is key: It gives the bagels a thick, dark golden-brown crust while still allowing them to rise. When you slice into a boiled bagel, the interior should be soft and squishy, with a wonderful elasticity that should hold up against a thick glob of cream cheese. Official records date the birth of bagels to 1610 in Poland, and we have New York’s Jewish community to thank for folding them into the fabric of our country, starting in the mid-19th century when Eastern European immigrants began arriving in the U.S. New York-style bagels gained popularity here in the 1970s, and through the decades, they’ve evolved from niche breakfast bread to essential breakfast carb.
