SCC Students Partner with SEIRPC to Build Affordable Housing

February 19, 2021 West Burlington, Ia-  Southeastern Community College (SCC) and Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission (SEIRPC) partnered to construct a home in Burlington. SCC construction students gained valuable experience by working on major components of the home: framing, roofing, insulating, siding, windows, sheetrock and other similar items.  Subcontracts, fund management, and other development tasks were subcontracted out. SCC Construction Technology instructor Doug Riley appreciates the opportunity students had to apply their learning. “Students got a lot out of experience out of the project,” he said. “Their contribution will live on for years as a family makes it their new home.” A family of three purchased the house earlier this year and are set to move in next month.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, they re now waiting for their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.  Medicap Pharmacy gave Leroy Bell, 75, his first dose. “Oh, I m feeling very good! Yeah, it’s fine, said Bell. I’m glad we’re getting it.” Nearly 75 residents rolled up their sleeves to get the vaccine, including, 101-year-old, Mary Brandt.

SCC students build new home for SEIRPC project

The Hawk Eye Southeast Iowa Housing, Inc. partnered with Southeastern Community College (SCC), to have their construction trades class gain valuable real-world experience by building a house in Burlington. SEIRPC Executive Director Mike Norris announced recently that a family has purchased the home at 2208 Amelia Street, at the corner of Amelia Street and Hagemann Avenue. Norris said he is excited by the project s results.  “New home construction is key to adding value in existing neighborhoods, he said. “Infill projects like this are important to encourage investment and create new housing opportunities.” The City of Burlington acquired and demolished a dilapidated home on the site.
