ELLWOOD CITY The time for paying the borough s parking meters with coins alone may soon expire.
Ellwood City Council voted Monday night to advertise an amendment to the traffic ordinance that would allow motorists the use of parking permits at metered spaces in the downtown business district.
The amendment would let people parking on the street pay their meters the old-fashioned way, while also providing those who use the spaces regularly a coin-free option to finance their parking fees.
Cost for the permits has yet to be determined, but borough Manager David Allen said it will be similar to the cost of permits for the Beaver Avenue lot, which is $25 per month. Though the permits would offer a convenient way to pay for street parking, they would not guarantee permit holders a spot.

The State College Borough Council met Monday night to discuss several agenda items, such as the condition of borough parking structures.
Thomas Brown, facilities manager, and Edward Holmes, purchasing and risk management director, announced reconstruction projects from now until 2023 for the parking garages on Beaver Avenue, Fraser Street, Pugh Street and McAllister Street.
According to Brown, the buildings received low scores on their condition appraisal reports from Walker Consultants in 2020. Immediate repairs were suggested.
The overall costs of repairs will total near $4 million, according to Holmes.
Each of the infrastructures contain low compressive strength concrete samples, areas of loose or cracked thin brick within the columns and isolated areas of loose overhead concrete among other problems.
