The Ernakulam leg of the 25th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) kickstarted with the critically acclaimed Bosnian film Quo Vadis, Aida? being screened in front of a full house. State Cultural Affairs Minister A K Balan inaugurated the festival at the inauguration ceremony organised at the Saritha theatre complex in Kochi. The inaugural ceremony was conducted in compliance with strict COVID protocol, including thermal scanning and social distancing. 80 films from over 30 countries are lined up for the screening In his inaugural address, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said an uncompromising political stance was what defined the festival in the global cultural map, noting that the international competition category offers entry to movies only from the third world countries. At the inaugural function, as many as 25 lamps were lit symbolising the 25 years of the festival. The silver jubilee edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) will get off to a start on Wednesday at the Nishagandhi auditorium here.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the festival at 6 p.m. at a function to be presided over by Minister for Cultural Affairs A.K Balan.
Assembly Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan will be the chief guest of the event. French New Wave filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard is to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for this year. Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan will be accepting the award on Godard’s behalf at the inaugural function.
