Best of Both Worlds: Central’s Thomas Set To Wrestle For Keiser University

Two of Roby Thomas’ favorite places are the beach and the wrestling mat so it was only natural to somehow try to bring the two worlds together. On Wednesday, the Central High School senior succeeded.
Thomas, a three-time TSSAA state tournament qualifier, signed scholarship papers to wrestle for Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida where he will wrestle not only for the Seahawks’ mat program, but for former UTC All-SoCon champion Nick Soto, who is in his first year as head coach.
Burenga, McMaster chosen for 2021 R.K. Thompson Self-Reliance Award

VAN WERT – On Wednesday, members of the Van Wert Service Club met to announce this year’s winners of the R.K. Thompson Self-Reliance Award. The R.K. Thompson Self-Reliance Award is given to the female and male senior student who does the best with what she or he has. This year’s winners were Jamie Burenga of Van Wert and Peter McMaster of Lincolnview.
GPS Seniors Inducted Into Cum Laude Thursday, May 6, 2021
As the GPS Class of 2021 completes its senior year, it first recognizes and installs its newest members into Cum Laude Society. Ten seniors join the company of their high-achieving sisters before them as their chosen faculty members pay tribute to their time at GPS. Graduating classmates and family members joined the inductees in the Frierson Theatre while underclassmen, teachers, and friends joined virtually via livestream.
English Department Chair Katy Berotti welcomed those in attendance and explained the importance of the day. “The national Cum Laude Society was organized over a century ago to recognize extraordinary scholastic achievement in secondary schools. Each girl we induct today earned this honor by excelling in rigorous GPS courses,” she said.

(NEWTON) The Jasper County School Board met for its regular monthly meeting in April a week ago last night in Newton. The Board : agreed to postpone Board and Superintendent Goal Setting until later in the month of May : reviewed the District’s bus rotation program and agreed to seed bids for seven 71 passenger buses and one wheelchair bus : noted that the High School Graduation is set for Saturday night, May 15, starting at 7:00, in the NCHS Gymnasium : noted a couple of important upcoming dates – May 18 is the final day of student attendance for grades 1 though 11 and May 21 is the final day for teachers for an Institute Day : Jasper County Clerk Amy Tarr presented the canvassed votes from the April 6 election, showing the following were elected to the School Board – Brady Shull, Holly Farley, Mandy Rieman, and Jed Earnest : approved the resignation of Board member Jon Fulton effective immediately
