BELLOWS FALLS â Rockingham will lease a portion of the town-owned gravel pit in Bartonsville to a Montpelier solar developer for the next 20 years.
The unanimous decision last week by the Rockingham Select Board came after months of discussion. The town had been approached by a handful of solar companies, eager to take advantage of the reclaimed gravel pit, which would yield any developer a high electric rate, according to state policy, which favors solar development on brownfield sites and gravel pits.
The board granted the 20-year contract to Novus Energy Development LLC, whose motto is âEnergy with a bright future.â

BELLOWS FALLS â Two Vermont solar companies outlined similar but competing plans for a 2.2 megawatt solar array on the town-owned gravel pit in Bartonsville this week.
The Rockingham Select Board didnât make any decision Wednesday night, saying it might want to retain a portion of the gravel pit for unrelated highway maintenance operations, and it didnât know how much of the 44-acre parcel it would need.
The parcel is located between Route 103 and the Williams River, and adjacent to the former Vermont State Police barracks, which is now a truck-driving school.

Just in time for the 10th anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene in August 2021, the Rockingham Library invites area residents to take part in a series of programs to consider lessons learned from natural disasters experienced here. We will think together about Tropical Storm Irene, how well we recovered and what we can do to prepare for another climate-related emergency in the future.
The series begins with a book discussion of âDeluge: Tropical Storm Irene, Vermontâs Flash Floods, and How One Small State Saved Itselfâ by Peggy Shin. Thanks to Vermontâs Interlibrary Loan System and a generous grant from the American Library Association, Rockingham Library has many copies of this book to loan out to the community.
