On The Road 5/7: 2021 Nissan Armada Platinum
In general, I am not a big fan of big SUVs or oversized pickup trucks.
Not because there is something qualitatively wrong with vehicles from that segment, more because my personal preference is to not have to drive something that big around on an everyday basis.
However, if I had to choose a big, three-row SUV from among the vehicle choices in that segment, I do have preferences, of course.
Enter the 2021 Nissan Armada Platinum 4WD – a vehicle that has received an extensive makeover for 2021.
At first glance, my mind would think, “Oh no, not another week of commandeering a large, clumsy boat around.”

If you live in New Jersey you already know that when it comes to cars and music our biggest ambassador is The Boss himself – Mr. Bruce Springsteen.
One of the many gems he penned was Pink Cadillac.
A small bit of that song proclaims: “I love you for your pink Cadillac. Crushed velvet seats. Riding in the back. Cruising down the street. Waving to the girls. Feeling out of sight. Spending all my money. On a Saturday night.”
Wow!
The vision you get from that song is almost perfect.
But that was then when the brand was noted for being the ultimate big cruiser mobile.

Just about 7 years ago, when I was selling Mercedes Benz automobiles, a representative from the German automakers North American headquarters gave a presentation to our sales crew on where the product lineup was heading.
It was generally upbeat. But, decidedly pointed in one direction.
“Smaller.”
“We are going to get smaller.”
That was the clear-cut message. What the Mercedes rep meant, more specifically, wasn’t that Mercedes, as a company, was going to shrink. No company looks to the future and says that.
Rather, he was saying that the product lineup and offerings in the North American market were going to lean towards offering smaller cars and SUVs with smaller engines that are less expensive and get better gas mileage.

In the late 1970s, I drove and owned a Ford Pinto. I generally liked this vehicle. It had a manual transmission and a cool racing stripe.
It was also fun to drive.
All that came to a crashing halt one day, though, when I was motoring along with it and a news report and came on the radio detailing how this particular model was prone to danger from rear-end collisions that could cause potentially fatal gas tank explosions.
As Bob Dylan once wrote, “You don’t need a weatherman to tell you which way the wind is blowing.”
