Timothy Myers ACS is an award-winning freelance photojournalist based in the U.S. He has worked for the BBC, CNN, ESPN, National Geographic, the United Nations and others to film special investigations, human interest stories and breaking news in hostile environments. Myers’ work has aired on all of his native Australia’s commercial networks. A member of the Australian Cinematographers Society, Myers is affiliated with Generation Media, which has offices in Los Angeles and Sydney. His summer 2020 images of the Washington, D.C., police aggressively clearing peaceful protesters were hailed as depicting a violation of constitutional rights and an infringement on press freedoms. Myers and reporter Amelia Brace were attacked by the police while filming the protests. On this day in Hip Hop history, The Roots released their fourth studio album
Things Fall Apart. This project is considered by many publications at the Roots “breakthrough” album, gaining them coverage in major publications and expanding their fan base. It also came at a time when the whole Soulquarian collective (D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Most Def, and J Dilla) began to come out the gate with hit album after hit album (some titles including
Mama’s Gun, Voodoo).
This album was the group’s first project to sell 500,000 copies. The album was eternally stamped at the 2000 Grammy Awards when the album’s hit single You Got Me featuring Erykah Badu and Eve (then known as Eve of Destruction) won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Early on during the pandemic I’d seen a short film from the Philippines and read an extended blog from northern Italy, both featuring photographers dressed in hazmat suits, toting cameras housed beneath protective covers. Embedded with paramedics as they dealt with seriously ill patients, my fellow photojournalists sensitively showed doctors in sweltering emergency hospital pop-up units or portrayed intimate moments as spouses and other terrified family members bid farewell to their loved ones as they were stretchered from their homes, some for the last time.
Over the following weeks I was drawn to the frequent updates of the legendary photographer Peter Turnley’s remarkable black-and-white street portraits from New York (and later Paris, his adopted home).
