The amendments come after the NSW minister for planning and public spaces Rob Stokes returned planning authority for south Waterloo to the City of Sydney.
After preliminary planning began in 2011 by the NSW Government, the original master plan was released in January 2019. The proposal was altered last week in response to feedback from the community and the City of Sydney Council.
Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore says that the council has been flexible in its approach to the redevelopment, and the utilisation of community consultation will only help the plans in future as it has in the past.

No more than three high-rise apartment buildings will tower over Waterloo’s revamped public housing estate, under the City of Sydney’s plans to accommodate thousands of new homes demanded by the NSW government.
A wide central thoroughfare lined with trees and shops, new streets and two parks are also among the latest plans to overhaul the southern end of the sprawling site with a mix of private apartments and social housing.
The council is proposing three high-rise buildings, instead of the nine towers suggested by the state government.

The council has released its proposal to overhaul the Waterloo estate in what will be one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects. The shape and density of the redevelopment has triggered debate between the council and state government since plans to demolish existing homes and rebuild the precinct were announced in 2015.
