Much ado about masking in the Solanco School District — and we really don t understand why, because masks have helped to return kids to the classroom [editorial]

THE ISSUE About 60 Southern Lancaster County residents lined the road leading to Solanco School District’s Smith Middle School on Monday evening to protest the state requirement that students wear face masks in school except when eating and during mask breaks. As LNP | LancasterOnline’s Alex Geli reported, in Pennsylvania counties with substantial community transmission of COVID-19, school districts that offer in-person instruction must enforce the universal mask mandate from the state Department of Health. Lancaster County has been in the substantial category — meaning it has either 100 or more cases per 100,000 residents or a 10% or more positivity rate in the last seven days — since October 2020.

The Solanco school board is facing pressure from a group of residents who want their children to have a choice whether they want to wear a face mask in school. About 60 Southern Lancaster County residents on Monday evening lined the road leading up to Smith Middle School with signs that read “Let them breathe, “My kids, my choice and “No more masks to protest the requirement that all students 2 years and older wear a face mask in school except when eating while socially distanced and during mask breaks. Currently in Pennsylvania counties with substantial community transmission of COVID-19, school districts that offer in-person instruction must submit an attestation form promising they will implement and enforce the universal mask mandate from the state Department of Health.

Joyce retired after 37 years as head cook and chef for West Liberty State College through ARA Food Service and then Bethany College through Aladdin. She was a member of Kadesh Chapel United Methodist Church being very active through the luncheons, treasury committee and Bible studies. Many will re- member Joyce for her enjoyment of Bingo, Vegas trips with her family, reading a good book; but most of all, for her love of baking for everyone especially those coconut cream pies, pumpkin rolls and lemon pies to name a few. Joyce’s granddaughter, Melissa ex- presses that she was the foundation that kept their family strong.
