The world was turned on its side, masks covered up any chance at a smile and people were hospitalized all over the state. What hadn’t changed is the loyalty of community supporters in a time of need. Throughout Brunswick and the Midcoast Maine community, local non-profits have stayed strong because of the volunteered time and generous gifts from our supporters. This year, despite the pandemic, loyalty and dedication of Tedford Housing’s supporters have not waivered, but instead grown to new heights.

increase font size Share Congress must not leave Washington without passing COVID relief Thank you to Blaine Flanders for powerfully describing the housing needs of our low-income neighbors (“Giving Voice: Affordable housing; causes of homelessness in Maine,” Dec. 11).  The economic devastation of this pandemic is making the problem so much worse. New census data shows that nearly 83 million Americans one in every four of us reported difficulty covering rent, mortgage and food in November. The CDC’s eviction moratorium is about to end on Dec. 31. Can you imagine becoming homeless in January?  During a pandemic?  Is that really who we want to be?

This gap in housing causes more people to become at risk of experiencing homelessness. Extremely low-income households, including families and individuals, struggle enough to make ends meet, and more often than not it is just not enough income to support paying their rent. Accumulating debt is likely, now more than ever, and unavoidable for some as we head into the colder months. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, 27% of all renting households in Maine are extremely low-income. Extremely low-income households are at or fall below the poverty line, or are below 30% of the area median income. The lack of affordable housing across the state and in Mid-Coast Maine has created an indefinite need for housing.
