Parties in Punjab promise Dalits space, they have it in religion already | Ludhiana News

TOI Photo JALANDHAR: With the state assembly elections now only months away, all political parties are opening promising prominence to communities and castes. With Jat Sikhs already assured dominance in state politics, BJP is pledging power to Dalits, which SAD is countering with Hindu and Dalit deputy chief ministers. Even with internal strife bubbling over, the Congress too is trying to strike communal balance. While parties talk like they are inventing social engineering in Punjab, the fact remains that these safety valves already exist. For example, heads of two most important and highest Sikh institutions come from so called lower castes. Giani Harpreet Singh, acting Jathedar of Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, comes from scheduled caste (SC) background. Similarly, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Bibi Jagir Kaur comes from backward class (BC) background.

Ruckus at Rahon Road as truck kills 25-yr-old man | Ludhiana News

Representative image LUDHIANA: A mob raised a ruckus after a speeding truck killed a 25-year-old man at Rahon Road, near Amarjeet Colony, on Monday. Kimti Lal, a resident of Mangat village, had left his house on a bike for a salon in Indra Nagar for a training in hairdressing. When he reached near Amarjeet Colony, a speeding truck hit his bike around 8am. The truck driver dragged Kimti for a few metres. After people raised the alarm, he jammed on the brakes and escaped, leaving the vehicle behind. Passersby called up the police and informed Kimti’s family. His family sat near the body and staged a protest by blocking the road. They did not allow cops to take the body to civil hospital and demanded that the truck driver and the owner be brought to the spot.
