No 23 Arkansas Upsets No 9 Vanderbilt

Jessica Roberson March 5, 2021 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 23 Razorback women’s tennis team claimed an upset over Southeastern Conference foe, No. 9 Vanderbilt 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Billingsley Tennis Center. The win moves Arkansas to 10-0 on the year while Vanderbilt falls to 10-2 overall. Junior Laura Rijkers clinched the win for Arkansas with an exhilarating three-set victory over Vanderbilt’s Marcella Cruz on court six. After falling to Cruz 7-6 (5) in the first set, Rijkers fought back for an impressive 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-4 comeback. Sophomore Kelly Keller and Rijkers gave Arkansas an early advantage in doubles play as they won their match against Vanderbilt’s Christina Rosca and Anessa Lee, 6-4. Freshmen pair Indianna Spink and Morgan Cross were leading on court two 5-4, but Commodores Emma Kurtz and Cruz forced the match into a tiebreaker set where the Razorbacks ultimately fell 7-6 (5).

Arkansas Defeats Wichita State, 6-1

February 11, 2021 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team extended its win streak to five matches on Thursday afternoon, defeating Wichita State, 6-1 inside the Billingsley Tennis Center. Doubles partners Jackie Carr and Kelly Keller made quick work of Alexandra Lazarova and Natsumi Kurahashi of Wichita State (6-2) while freshmen Razorback duo Morgan Cross and Indianna Spink defeated WSU’s Ting-Ya Hsu and Jie Xin Zheng, 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for Arkansas. The Razorbacks saw continued success in singles play, taking down the Shockers on five of six courts. Laura Rijkers was the first to earn a win, registering a 6-1, 6-0 victory against WSU’s Lazarova. Keller and Rice followed suit, taking down Wichita State’s Marta Bellucco (6-1, 6-3) and Ting-Ya Hsu (6-3, 6-2) respectively.

Cross Earns UTR ITA Player of the Week

February 3, 2021 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Freshman women’s tennis player, Morgan Cross was named UTR ITA Player of the Week, announced by the organization on Wednesday. Cross notched some big wins in singles and doubles last week, helping the Razorbacks to three consecutive sweeps of their opponents, Kansas, Oral Roberts and Kansas State. Over the course of the action-packed weekend, Arkansas freshman Morgan Cross went undefeated in singles and doubles. Cross started off the weekend with a big win in doubles over No. 49 Ngounoue/Manu of Kansas. Cross and partner Spink clinched the doubles point against the Jayhawks helping the Razorbacks to a perfect 7-0 win.

Razorbacks Open 2021 Campaign with 5-2 Win over SMU

January 24, 2021 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team did an outstanding job at making a statement in its 2021 season opener on Sunday, defeating the SMU Mustangs 5-2 inside the Billingsley Tennis Center. Arkansas took an early lead after capturing the doubles point early. Freshmen duo Indianna Spink and Morgan Cross dropped their match to Jackie Nylander and Chandler Carter of SMU in the number one spot (6-3), but shortly after Lauren Alter and Jackie Carr would tie the score with a 6-3 win over Winslow Huth and Claudia Bartolome. It would come down to court two, where Razorbacks Kelly Keller and Tatum Rice defeated Mustang pair Hadley Doyle and Nicole Petchey (6-3) to clinch the doubles point for the Hogs.
