This apparently isn’t a one time incident. As noted earlier, hours after James went public, Gail Kim alluded that it was a common practice in the past, asking “Do they still do that?” Since then, Maria Kanellis took to Twitter to say she suffered the same treatment.
“Last year I got one too,” Kanellis tweeted, adding a crying laughing/crying emoji after the sentence.
Kanellis was fired from WWE last year, along with husband Mike Bennett, as part of a massive wave of cuts. Kanellis has been vocal about WWE’s handling of the situation, calling them out repeatedly for firing talent at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside Bennett, Kanellis recently signed a deal with Ring of Honor to return to the promotion for the first time since 2015.

WWE Hall of Famer Sean Waltman (“X-Pac”, “Syxx”, 1-2-3 Kid, etc.) spoke about the recent WWE releases that occurred on April 15th on his “Wrestling 4-Life” podcast. Here is what Waltman had to say about Samoa Joe, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Mickie James, Bo Dallas and others being let go by the company.
On which release surprised him the most: “Yeah, [Samoa Joe] for sure. People are bummed out. I am too. The thing is this is Samoa Joe man. He’s a main eventer anywhere as far as I’m concerned, and it just opens up so many great possibilities. I’m looking forward to seeing where he ends up.”

Cassie vs. Eva Marie:
I believe this was Eva Marie’s first match in NXT. And it was not very good at all. Honestly, it was pretty boring. Cassie was able to get some kicks in, but Eva would win with a low risk Sliced Bread.
Billie Kay vs. Eva Marie:
This match is actually a bit notable, as I believe this was the first time where Jessie McKay wrestled under the ring name of Billie Kay. This match was slightly better than the Cassie one, but not by much, really just more of the same, with Eva doing an abdominal stretch as a rest hold. Billie did a good job selling for her, and Eva would once again win with Sliced Bread. These two matches were bad.

Pro Wrestling 4 Life and Wrestling Inc. Managing Editor Nick Hausman asked Waltman which release surprised him the most.
