The Groundhog s Prediction Is In

The snowstorm nor the pandemic didn t stop Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) from making his yearly prediction. Since 1887, every February 2nd, folks have been gathering at Gobbler s Knob (a tiny hill outside of Punxsutawney, PA), to witness the groundhog make his prediction for the remainder of winter. If Phil sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter it shall be, if not, than an early spring for you and me! Despite a cloudy morning in Punxsutawney, the groundhog SAW HIS SHADOW. Yep, six more weeks of winter it is! FUN FACT: Groundhog Day has its roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas, when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. Germans expanded on this concept by selecting an animal the hedgehog as a means of predicting weather. -history.com

With those words, two morning DJs woke fictional weatherman Phil Conners in the classic 1993 comedy Groundhog Day. The big news on everybody s lips though – chapped lips – was: Do you think Phil s gonna come out and see his shadow? February 2 is Groundhog Day, and that s the question at hand once again. One thing we wondered though, was just how often does Punxsutawney Phil – seer of seer, prognosticator of prognosticators, and the most famous groundhog in Pennsylvania – actually see his shadow.
