Low traffic neighbourhoods have become a front line in the battle between those urging radical lifestyle changes to combat climate change and those who regard driving as a fundamental right.
Transport secretary Grant Shapps has expressed an ambition for 50% of travel in towns and cities to be walked or cycled by 2030, and although LTNs have been associated with cities, they may need to be extended to smaller towns if the target is to be hit.
In an LGC survey of 236 council respondents, 36% said they had at least partially rolled out LTNs, a further 16% said they were likely to do so and 19% were unlikely to do so, with the rest unsure.

Targeted Covid-19 variant testing is taking place in parts of Dalston and Shoreditch after two Covid-19 variants were found in the areas.
Hackney council urges every resident over 16 who lives or works in the affected areas to get a Covid-19 PCR test, even if they do not have symptoms, to help stop the spread of the variants in the community.
These areas include parts of Shoreditch, around Old Street and Great Eastern Street; and parts of Dalston town centre, around Dalston Lane and Kingsland High Street.

The government however, claims in the current system there is an unacceptable potential for electoral fraud and that strengthening the integrity of the electoral system will improve public confidence.
It is proposed that photo ID will not be limited to UK passports or driving licenses and research compiled by the Cabinet Office shows that 91 per cent of electors already have a form of acceptable identification.
Those without photo ID would need to get a free Voter Card to take part in elections.
Mayor Glanville criticised the automatic right planned to be given to developers for planning permission without proper local scrutiny and only committing to publishing a response to consultation rather than legislation on its pledge to ban no-fault Section 21 evictions.
