There will be 17 seats on St Helens Council to be contested overall across 16 wards. Labour is seeking to keep a grip on power while opposition parties and independent candidates are aiming to make inroads into the majority. A total of 48 councillors make up the council, three in each ward but two seats are vacant – one in the Windle ward and one in Earlestown. Therefore, currently, there are 46 councillors with 34 Labour; four Liberal Democrats; three Conservatives; three independents and two Greens. Key issues in the campaign have included St Helens’ post-Covid recovery and the row over the Local Plan and release of green belt land for development.

St Helens goes to the polls in just over one week to elect 16 councillors in local elections being held on May 6.
Adam Goldner doesn’t miss.
In Penn’s triumphant 23-5 win at Cabrini a rare DI vs. DIII showdown Goldner scored nine goals on 14 shots.
“For two hours, we forgot about all we’ve been through and all that we’re being kept from doing right now, and just enjoyed playing on the field together,” Penn coach Mike Murphy said postgame.
Jack Schultz connected with Goldner for a mid-range shot 55 seconds in, then Dylan Gergar (7G, 2A) scored 37 seconds later. But Cabrini was pesky early, forcing Penn mishaps in the middle of the field and capitalizing with speed in transition, keeping it as close as one-goal game through late in the second quarter.
