Supreme Court distances judges from Calabarzon killings

The Supreme Court, through the Office of the Court Administrator (OCA), distanced trial court judges from the outcome of the Bloody Sunday operations in Calabarzon that were carried out through their search warrants. The issuance of the search warrants by the judges and their service or implementation by the law enforcers are two different acts. The issuance of search warrants is judicial in nature, said Court Administrator Midas Marquez in a report sent to Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta dated March 12, but which was obtained by media only on Tuesday, March 16.
Lawyers killed: 61 under Duterte, 49 from Marcos to Aquino

61 lawyers have been killed during President Rodrigo Duterte s 5 years in power, compared to the 49 lawyers killed in the span of 44 years, from Ferdinand Marcos to Benigno Noynoy Aquino III.
Data collated by Rappler, both from government and other groups, shows that there have been at least 110 lawyers, judges, and prosecutors killed in the Philippines from 1977 to 2021, with more than half of the killings occurring during the Duterte administration.
Lawyers in the Philippines have been restless, risking contempt, some calling for a strike, to demand stronger actions from the government to address the unprecedented spike in killings of persons in the legal profession.
Guevarra defends Duterte and late actions on high lawyer killings

President Rodrigo Duterte should not be blamed for the high number of lawyer killings under his term, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said during a press briefing in Malacañang which he joined on Monday, March 15.
He said this in the face of new data that shows the staggering high number of lawyers killed during his close to 5 years in office compared to the combined 44 years of former presidents. Nangyayari yan (that happens) because of circumstances, and not because of whoever is the head of the present administration, said Guevarra.
