BOLTON: New 'prosperity index' ranks Bolton as among the most deprived areas of UK

Bolton Town Hall Google Earth A NEW index to track the Government’s progress on its ‘levelling up’ agenda puts Bolton among the most deprived boroughs in the UK. The Legatum Institute has published the UK Prosperity Index revealing the prosperity of every local authority and highlighting considerable variations between regions. The institute uses traditional indicators such as infrastructure and transport alongside the safety and security of communities, people’s physical and mental health and the conditions for local enterprise as measures for its index. Overall Bolton ranks 330th out of 379 local authorities with a particular poor rating for safety and security, based largely on crime figures.

700,000 UK households used food banks in 2019-20, report finds

700,000 UK households used food banks in 2019-20, report finds The Trussell Trust Brent Food Bank, Neasden, London (Jonathan Brady/PA) Some 700,000 UK households used a food bank in the year prior to the coronavirus outbreak, according to estimates from a study on food poverty. This represents 2.5% of all UK households between 2019-20, the Trussell Trust said, with food bank users at the start of last year living on just £248 a month on average after paying for their housing. The charity said hunger in the UK is not about food but about people not having enough money for the basics, with this amount needing to cover energy and water costs, council tax, food, and other essentials.
