Sounders vs Atlanta, recap: Still unbeaten, but less perfect

Sounders vs. Atlanta, recap: Still unbeaten, but less perfect Share this story Max Aquino / Sounder at Heart The Seattle Sounders welcomed Atlanta United into Lumen Field with a full supporters section on Sunday afternoon, but sent everyone home a little disappointed with a 1-1 draw. The Sounders opened the scoring up early with a headed goal from Raúl Ruidíaz off of a corner in the 6th minute. Atlanta held the bulk of possession throughout the game, but for all their control of the ball they failed to create much in the way of real chances. That finally changed in the 86th minute when they drew a penalty that resulted in their one clear chance of the game, which Josef Martinez converted.

Too many missed opportunities as Sounders drop two points at home

Jane Gershovich / Sounders FC Communications SEATTLE The stage was all set. The Seattle Sounders had their biggest in-stadium crowd of the season including a reasonably packed Brougham End and a broadcast television audience to boot. The Sounders entered the match on a roll that seemed nearly as sustainable as it was impressive. Their opponent was another in an ever-growing line of challengers for their status as marquee team in MLS. Not that they needed it, but a win would have put an emphatic stamp on the start of Seattle’s season and sent them into their final game before the June international break on a dead sprint.

A packed supporters section will greet the Sounders in full voice for the first time since March 7, 2020 when they played the Columbus Crew to a 1-1 draw. Shortly after, the MLS season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Having fans back in Lumen Field stands was a welcome change

Max Aquino / Sounder at Heart SEATTLE At some point last year, it was a common dream to imagine a sort of V-Day moment. A day when we’d all collectively celebrate the end of this pandemic with a parade, fireworks, hugging everyone we saw on the street and, heck, maybe a soccer game. It was fun to imagine, a sort of light at the end of a very dark tunnel. But almost as soon as the reality of the pandemic set in when we realized that this wouldn’t be just a two-week pause while the world settled down the reality of the vaccine rollout started to become clear. There wouldn’t be one day where all of us could suddenly celebrate together. Rather, it was going to come in waves, waves spread out over many months. We’d get there eventually, but probably only after other, less communal segments of life were starting to feel normal again.
